My own Reencuentro Experience
I thought it'd be a good idea to share with you how I ended up in the middle of a screaming crowd (and enjoying every minute of it) when at first I decided to forgo the concert and watched it on TV.... Boy! I'm glad I didn't do that! :) I knew when at first I heard about a Menudo Reunion that it would be a hit. The funny thing is that the first time I heard something about a possible reunion was in the radio listening to El Bureo on la Mega Estación (one of the most popular rock radio stations in PR) while driving home from work. the DJs were talking about if the group composed by Rene, Xavier, Ricky, Johnny and Miguel got together it would be an instant hit. One of the DJs was even singing some of the songs (he knew them!!) Thinking back, maybe the DJs knew something was cooking, and they were like giving hints about a possible reunion. Or maybe not, this is only an hypothesis I got.
Anyway, the time came for the first three concerts and neither my sister or me had the money or the time to go to any of the concerts. I was thinking "oh well, I'll catch it on TV". When after the firsts three concerts, they announced three more I was like, "I had to be there!". So, I got together with my sister Bea and planned what to do. We decided to invite our Mom to go with us, and she happily accepted. After all, she was the one who took us to two concerts back when we were teenagers. :)
So one Saturday, I had to go to work to the office, and I told my sister that I'll stop at Ticketcenter at Plaza Las Américas (our biggest shopping mall, for those who are not familiar with PR) and buy the tickets. Up to this moment everything was fine, until when I got to the third level at Plaza, where Ticketcenter is located and saw the line for the tickets. Whew, talk about a backtrip! There were mainly young women my age, early and middle twenties mostly, and everybody was like thinking the same thing like me: Menudo was back again with a vengeance, or rather, they were never gone, it was just a break they took. Anyway, here I was keeping an eye to my wristwatch, not moving forward and thinking "I have to get to the office!" So, I decided to step out of the line, go to a pay phone (wished I had a cellular phone!) call my sister and told her what was going on. She told me then that we can buy the tickets via telephone, and I was like NOW you tell ME!?!? grr! >:( Of course for that you needed a credit card. So, I gave her MY credit card information, so SHE could make the phone call and separate the tickets. After that, I hung up and went to work.
Finally, my sister called me at the office and told me she got the tickets. Next thing in the agenda was how to leave work early so I can make it in time to the Coliseo Roberto Clemente. Usually I leave the office between 6:30 or 7:00pm depending of how rush things are. I decided with my sister, that I'd leave the office at 6pm and go straight to Plaza Las Américas and meet her and Mom there. She would walk from Law School, since it was near by, and go to Plaza and find Mom there. Let me tell you, that day our beepers and Mom's cellular phone went almost crazy. :)
So we met in Plaza, ate something there and walked to the Coliseo. (For those of you who are not from PR, Plaza Las Americas is in front of the Coliseo Roberto Clemente. Once we were approaching the Coliseo you could feel in the air excitement, and that something special was going on. (like Mildred describes it in her page). Once inside, for a moment I felt like a young teenager again, and in the other hand there was this kind of excitement I'd always felt when I go to a rock concert, but in a different way. You don't usually see people my Mom's age in a rock concert. ;) (kidding Mami!) The main difference here with a rock concert was when the lights went off and all the screaming started and it was mostly female, you know the kind of screaming Menudo always made possible. At that moment I didn't even think, I just stand up and started to yell at the top of my lungs like the 10,000 souls there. That moment is still in my memory every time I put the CD on.
The rest is history as most of you know. Hopefully the guys will have the times of their lives with this tour. I wish them the best, because they deserve it. I read in a magazine (VEA, I think) that probably they will end the tour when everything started: Puerto Rico. I hope so, because if they do another series of shows here in the Island I'll do my very best to be there again and dance, sing and scream at the top of my lungs one more time.
